TISHA B’AV OBSERVANCE AT OHAV SHALOM 2021 The 9th of Av – July 17-18, 2021

Tisha B’Av, the 9th day of the Hebrew month of Av, is the day on which the first and second temples in Jerusalem were destroyed, followed by persecution and exile for the Jewish people.  According to tradition, it is the day on which the expulsion of the Jews from Spain occurred in 1492.  Tisha B’Av is a day of communal fasting, mourning, and remembering.  It is also when, according to tradition, the messiah will be born, thus commencing our people’s and the world’s redemption from evil.  

This year, Tisha B’av services will be held at the following times at Ohav:

Saturday Evening, July 17: 

7:15 PM—Shabbat Afternoon Service followed by 3rd meal for Shabbat and preparation for the fast. 

8:30PM  Tisha B’Av fast begins THIS IS AN IN PERSON SERVICE AT OHAV SHALOM

9:00 PM—End of Shabbat, followed by the recitation of the Book of Lamentations.

In keeping with the spirit of Tish B’Av, please consider wearing non-leather shoes during the service and reading of Lamentations. Small flashlights and cell phones are welcomed to be used to accommodate reading during the ceremony when sanctuary lighting is diminished in keeping with the somber nature of the holiday. 

Sunday, July 18:

8:30 AM—Tisha B’Av Morning Service THIS IS AN IN PERSON SERVICE AT OHAV SHALOM (we do not wear Tallit and Tefillin that morning)

7:30 PM—Afternoon Services THIS IS AN IN PERSON SERVICE AT OHAV SHALOM (We DO wear Tallit and Tefillin for the afternoon services)
