Mazal Tov! We are thrilled to celebrate this milestone with you! A Jewish girl becomes a bat mitzvah at 12 years and one day according to the Hebrew calendar. A boy becomes a bar mitzvah at 13 years and one day according to the Hebrew calendar. Our longstanding congregational practice is to give girls bat mitzvah dates on or after their thirteenth birthdays according to the Hebrew calendar. Each child who celebrates becoming Bar or Bat Mitzvah at Ohav Shalom is offered a tutor. Tutors are assigned by the rabbinic or educational staff and are supervised by them.
Other guidelines pertaining to Bar/Bat Mitzvah training and to the day of the celebration itself can be found in the Bar/Bat Mitzvah Parents’ Handbook.

The sharing of food with friends and congregants after Sabbath morning service is a core part of Congregation Ohav Shalom. Kiddush usually lasts for a little over an hour as congregants gather together to discuss and laugh. It is a tradition for families celebrating simchas to sponsor a Kiddush.
Ohav Shalom has two full kosher kitchens and our staff often prepare all the food for these special Kiddushes in our facilities. If you would like to sponsor a Kiddush please contact Operations and Events Coordinator.
